LIMA (AP)—French Ambassador Albert Chambon has asked the Peruvian government to arrest and hold for extradtion German.bom Klaus Altman on grounds that he is Klaus Barbie, a convicted Nazi war criminal.
Altman, who has lived in Lima since last October and repeatedly has denied that he Is Barbie, was asked by Peruvian police to leave Peru on Wednesday for his own safety because of a furor over charges that he may be a war criminal.
Accompanied by two police agents, Altman left Lima by automobile on Wednesday, bound for the Andean mountain town of Puno, where he reportedly planned to enter Bolivia. He is a naturalized Bolivian.
In an official statement, Chambon said that he had made the request to the Interior Ministry rather than the Foreign Ministry in an attempted to gain time.
Chambon's request followed the arrival in Lima of Mrs. Beate Klarsfeld, official of the Internation League Against Anti-Semitism and Racism. Mrs. Klarsfeld, who arrived late Thursday from Munich, said she has photographic and documentary evidence proving that Altman is Barbie, a Wolrd War II Gestapo chief in Lyon. France. 4
Barbie has been convicted in absentia of a series of slayings including the torture death of Jean Moulin, French resistance hero.
Altman has lived in Bolivia since the early 1950s and is director and stockholder of Transmaritima Boliviana, a shipping company partly owned by the Bolivian government.
