Nazi's Extradition Sought by France
International Herald Tribune / December 1, 1989 PARIS -- France has asked Syria to extradite Alois Brunner, a wanted Nazi criminal, the French Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday. A spokesman said the request was handed to Syrian authorities by the French ambassador in Damascus on Dec. 27. The Nazi hunter. Serge Klars-feld, who tracked Brunner to Syria 16 years ago, described him as the most important Nazi criminal still alive. Brunner has been accused of organizing the deportation of 100,000 Jews from Germany, France and Slovakia during World War II to Nazi death camps. Syria said it has no knowledge of Brunner, who was sentenced to death in absentia by a French court in 1954. |
